As part of the collective research the group embarked on a screen-printing workshop in the Black Church Print Studio. The group covered water-based silkscreen printing on paper using the photo emulsion technique. We experimented using various opaque materials on a transparent overlay such as acetate, tracing paper, or oiled paper, which is then exposed over the emulsion-coated screen with a light source containing ultraviolet light. Colour layering and registration was also covered. The workshop was a daylong event. Everyone arrived to the workshop with an image in mind and black-and-white photographic and hand drawn imagery ready to be used. This was a space where we got to know each other, exchange ideas and generate dialogue about what we were doing and what we wanted to achieve as a collective. It was became apparent that being in the context of the studio and the activity of making work (labour) allowed us to focus more clearly rather than just sitting around a table as a reading research group. The natural progression was to have a studio space where we could physically work out both individually and collectively where we sit in the dark matter of the art world hence 24 hour WorkSpace on Bray Main Street. Following on from this the group has had a drawing day again in the context of labour as a way of generating ideas for the collective. We have been talking about space alternative spaces for work. |
